Pearl Garden
Project type
Institutional/Public
Location
55 Water Street, New York City
Project Year
2022
The project brief introduces a proposal for a 10,000m² net-zero emissions ‘climatorium’ which would serve as the office headquarters for a proposed ‘Climate Change Committee.’ This comprehensive studio project would entail the design and planning of all major elements of the building, including structural frame, details, MEP and net-zero carbon strategies. A mass timber frame is required and a focus should be placed on producing a work of civic design that invites the public to contemplate the works and goals of the Committee.
The building is intended as a prototype for sustainable building practices and demonstrating its possibilities to the public. With a publicly accessible ground floor, courtyard and rooftop garden, there are opportunities to create a civic space that transcends the threshold between inside and out. A central water feature and ampitheatre seating invite social gathering, while encouraging exploration of the employed sustainable architectural systems.
